the 3 types of ribs

First off the rib cage is made up of 24 ribs, two sets of 12 on each side. It protects the vital organs in the body. It is made so it can expand and retract with the lungs. There are thee types of ribs, true, false, and floating. True ribs are the first 7 ribs that are connected to the sternum by costal cartilage. False ribs are the other 5 ribs. Of these 5 ribs, 3 ribs are connected to the sternum by cartilage. The other 2 ribs are connected to the vertebrae only and not the sternum. So these two ribs are called the floating ribs.
Costal cartliage adds flexibility to the whole ribcage.
