Corpses generate electricity

Corpses generate electricity

In Durham, England cremation is about to become greener. A crematorium is installing turbines in its burners to convert waste heat into electricity. It is estimated each corpse will generate up to 150 kilowatt-hours of power, enough to run 1,500 televisions for an hour. Cremation rates are as high as 90% in Europe so the burners run 24 hours a day. This is a feasible way to generate more power. The cost of the turbine would be off-set in 5 years. In America, cremation rates are around 50%. That is expected to rise as the baby boomers are getting older, so it may come to pass in the USA.

In the not too distant future, our grandparents could be fueling our household appliances. That's a little creepy.
