Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in women, and is one, like many other cancers, has been nearly untreatable. Until recently, there have been no vaccines or possible vaccines for breast cancer, or any cancer for that matter.
When cells become cancerous, the sugars on their surface have distict changes that differ from those of regular cells. Because cancer originates in the body, the immune system will not attack the cells, and will instead see them as its own. By testing the new vaccine on mice, Dr. Gendler was able to train the immune system on the MUC1 protein strand; the strand of which is in the top 3 most important tumor proteins for cancer treatment.
