Title: Is light connected to why we sneeze?
Summary:
Many people wonder why it is that they tend to sneeze more when they are around bright lights or in the sunlight. Well science shows that the Photic Sneeze reflex is a genetic quirk that is still unexplained in science today. Even scientist, Aristotle thought on why one sneezes more after looking at the sun. He assumed that the heat hitting the nose was the cause of why we sneezed while looking up at the sun. A sneeze is generally triggered by an irritation in the nose. this is sensed by the Trigeminal nerve. The Trigeminal nerve is in close proximity to the optic nerve, which senses things like a sudden flood of light in the retina. The Photic Sneeze Reflex is a dominant trait. It is neither the X nor Y chromosome and only one copy of the gene has to be present for the trait to be expressed. So, if one parent tends to sneeze when they look at a bright light, then generally half of their kids will too. I think this information is interesting enough to share because it could potentially start a side project in people to investigate their families and others around them to prove the hereditary trait of the Photic Sneeze Reflex.
