Man survives nail gun accident

Dante Autullo, a 32-year-old Orland Park resident, survived shooting himself
in the head with a nail gun. It happened Tuesday morning while he was
standing on a ladder and working in the garage. His final shot recoiled and
he thought it breezed past his ear. He had a gash on his head but thought it
was from the nail gun whipping him in the head. His finger was still on the trigger
and the sensor on the gun recognized the flat surface of his head and shot the
nail into the middle of his brain. He worked that day and the next but then
started feeling nauseous. The doctors were amazed by the x-ray because he
was walking and talking. The nail missed the part of the brain that controls
motor function by millimeters. He didn’t feel the nail go in his head and there
was no evidence of penetration.
Mr. Autullo was amazingly lucky that he survived and still has motor function
after the surgery. Interesting cases like this can give doctors more information
on the brain and traumatic injuries. Why was he able to function for 36 hours
without noticing any problems? How could a 3.5 inch nail not cause more
damage? Perhaps the nail gun manufacturers can improve their sensors so
that they can detect body temperature or human flesh instead of a flat surface
so people can’t shoot themselves anymore.
