Burns are categorized by 3 main classifications:
First degree burn: A superficial, or on the outermost layer of skin, burn that causes inflammation. The most common of these is a sunburn. The inflammation can be painful as well as tender to the touch.
Second degree burn: A deeper burn than first degree, includes blistering of the skin and the burn goes deeper than first degree.
Third degree burn: Deeper than the first 2 burns. They involve all layers of the skin, and are usually painless after the initial burning due to the damage it makes to the nerves and blood vessels.
