The number of deaths resulting from Gastroenteritis, the common stomach and intestinal illness, has doubled in recent years. Two germs in particular are known to cause Gastroenteritis, C. difficile and Norovirus, and one specifically seems to be the cause for the increased number of deaths, C. difficile. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, CDC, reports that between 1999 and 2007 the total number of deaths from Gastro symptoms rose from 7,000 to 17,000. The deaths attributed to C. difficile rose by a factor of 5 while this study was being conducted increasing from 2,700 deaths to 14,500. In addition to C. difficile, Novovirus is more easily transmittable all year long and leads to the most Gastroenteritis sicknesses but not deaths.
This affects everyone because everyone can catch the sickness. This can lead to a better vaccination against the causes of Gastroenteritis.
