Two companies announced they have developed a machine that can decode
an individual's DNA in one day. One company, Life Technologies Corp.,
stated the test would cost $1000 while the other did not give the price.
The machines will identify the arrangement of the 3 billion chemical building
blocks of your DNA sequence. This type of decoding is usually just done in
research. Usually just part of the genome is tested for ancestry or disease
susceptibility. The challenge will be to analyze the data and deliver useful
information to the doctors who order the testing.
Life Technologies Corp. state the machine will cost $149,000 and
already has been ordered by Baylor College of Medicine, Yale School of
Medicine and the Broad Institute of Cambridge Massachusetts and will be
available in one year. The machine will pay for itself with just 149 uses.
Stock prices increased 8.3 percent after the announcement.
