New Species of Deep Sea Cat Shark Found in Galapagos Islands

The discovery of a new species is always interesting but it is more interesting for sharks because they are under incredible amounts of pressure from humans hunting them. Many shark species are becoming rare or close to extinction due to overhunting them for shark fin soup and other things. Also without the sharks to act as the top predator in their ecosystems the ecosystem is imbalanced when it tries to fix itself. Also overfishing is a problem for sharks, lowering their food supply, even if it isn’t as much of a problem for some, more widespread, species. Sadly the new species is contained in the Galapagos Islands and is less resilient to overfishing.
This could impact people who eat shark fin soup, fishers, and people who live near the ocean and Galapagos. This could lead to less Shark poaching and less overfishing.
