Anesthesia

First off, there are several types of anesthesia: Local, Regional, Sedation, and General Anesthesia. Local anesthesia is the numbing of on small area of the body, such as a finger or spot on the arm. Regional anesthesia is the numbing of an entire section of the body, such as an arm or leg, but does not affect the brain.
Sedation is used to make a patient drowzy, but not fall asleep. It is mostly used to make a patient more comfortible, and it does affect the brain as it can cause amnesia.
General anesthesia means the patient is "put under," or made unconscious. This affects the brain, as the person is completely unaware of pain, as well as experiences amnesia. General anesthetics are often the same drugs used in sedation, just in a higher dose.
