You know that smell is one of our five senses, but do you know what linked to it? Our memory, experience and emotion. Smell is tied in with taste and motor functions of the mouth to create flavor. The tongue can only sense five distinct tastes, bitter, salty, sour, sweet, and umami…while the nose can sense up to thousands different smells. Because smell is stored in long term memory, it is also tied into the emotion center of our brain. So it’s no surprise that smells can trigger old memories. Odors are often powerful cues that bring back memories back to your awareness. This is called an odor-elicited emotion. That’s why if people smell a certain smell they remember that smell from their childhood. Or if I smell cookies baking, I think of my grandma. Emotion is tied to smell because the act of smelling triggers the emotional center of the brain before the cognitive part of the brain. Now you know a little more about your sense of smell!
